    Malcolm Goff

    Malcolm was born sometime ago in Croydon. Having achieved his normal milestones and after checking out potential careers as a dustman, potato picker, barman and accountant he decided that a career in law was for him. He qualified as a solicitor in 1984 and began specialising in personal injury litigation in 1985, working in a busy specialist practice in Holborn, London. He moved to Nottingham in 1988 and in 1991, Malcolm was one of the founding partners of Barratt Goff & Tomlinson.

    Over the years he has conducted many major claims involving serious spinal and head injuries. Malcolm also specialises in clinical negligence claims and is a member of both the Law Society Personal Injury Panel and the Law Society Clinical Negligence Panel. He was successful in the Court of Appeal on behalf of a child who sued the health authority for failing to diagnose congenital dislocation of the hip and obtained compensation for several other children with this condition. Malcolm has acted for many children in claims involving medical accidents. Recently compensation of £5.65 million was awarded for a child suffering from cerebal palsy sustained at birth.

    He is a member of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers and a supporter of AvMA (Action against Medical Accidents).

    Outside work he keeps himself busy failing to keep up with his children and has been known to cycle to work and attend the gym!

    David Tomlinson

    David was born in Wilford, Nottingham.

    He attended Magnus Grammar School in Newark, and then went on to obtain an honours degree in Law from De Montfort University, Leicester, and the final solicitors examinations at the College of Law, Guildford.

    David trained with Day, Boot and Stone, Solicitors, in Nottingham and upon qualification in 1984 stayed with that firm until it merged with Howes Percival, a regional firm of solicitors. David became a partner in that firm in 1989.

    In 1991 David was one of the founding partners of Barratt Goff & Tomlinson.

    Throughout his career in the law David has specialised in Personal Injury cases, handling many claims involving injuries of the utmost severity with settlements running in to several millions of pounds. He has handled a large number of cases involving children who have been in major accidents, including those who have suffered serious head injuries or spinal cord injury. He is a fellow of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers and is the secretary of their Spinal Injury Special Interest Group.

    David has been recognised by Chambers Legal Directory as one of the Leaders in the Personal Injury Field.

    Outside work David is a very keen cricketer (now retired) and alleges that he was once a mean, fast bowler! He also has the rare distinction of having once been the world tiddlywinks high jump champion (he claims this was purely a stunt for charity, but we are not so sure!).

    He lives in Oakham with his wife, Jay and children, Max, Theo and Lucy.

    Alison Brooks

    Alison was born (with her twin sister Sally!) in Nottingham and attended Bramcote Hills Grammar School. She completed her Law degree at Reading University before returning to Nottingham for her law finals.

    Alison worked in London from 1986, training with a specialist defendant clinical negligence firm. Since qualifying in 1988 Alison has represented Claimants, specialising in clinical negligence, inquests and personal injury cases.

    Alison was an associate with Stewarts Solicitors and after a locum position with Leigh Day & Co embarked on a round the world trip. Alison joined Kingsley Napley as a partner in 1995 where she remained for 6 years. She finally returned to her home town of Nottingham in September 2001 and was delighted to join Barratts as a Partner.

    Alison is involved with pro-bono work for charities and has formerly been Secretary of the United Kingdom Acquired Brain Injury Forum (UKABIF) and Headway North West London. She is Governor of Rutland House School in Nottingham which provides education and support for children with special needs, Alison has spoken at conferences in the UK and Australia, and appeared on local BBC news and radio.

    Alison is one of the few solicitors who are members of both the Personal Injury and Clinical Negligence Panels of the Law Society. Alison is also a panel member of Action Against Medical Accidents ("AvMA"). She is also a fellow of the Association of P.I. Lawyers ("APIL") Alison has successfully handled complex, high value claims, including numerous cerebral palsy cases and has represented clients both in the UK and abroad. Since joining Barratts Alison has recovered compensation for clients in excess of £18 million.

    Ed Myers

    Ed is allegedly the oldest member of the company. A graduate of Nottingham University, he lives in West Bridgford with his wife Laurie and children, Hannah, Ben and Izzi.

    He has represented victims of a wide variety of incidents, including the Marchioness, the Ramsgate Ferry Disaster, the Kegworth Air Crash, the Soho pub bombing and the London Transport bombing. He specialises in industrial accidents/diseases, and brain and spinal injury claims of maximum severity. He has appeared for the last ten years in the Directory of Legal Experts.

    He has lectured widely and contributed to a variety of legal publications. he is a past editor of the Journal of P.I. Litigation. He sits as a Mental Health Tribunal Judge, and is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Mental Health Law. He is a Trustee, and Vice-Chairperson of Nottingham Headway, and Legal Secretary of the Nottinghamshire Medico-legal Society.

    Emma Veasey

    Emma joined Barratts in 2001 and qualified as a solicitor in 2005. She attended Anglia University where she obtained her Law Degree and thereafter Nottingham Law School to study for the Legal Practice Course.

    Since joining Barratts, Emma has worked in both the personal injury and clinical negligence departments. Her experience within personal injury has included claims involving RTAs, employer’s liability, public liability and CICA claims. In addition, Emma has acted on behalf of clients seeking compensation for injuries sustained whilst working at mines, such as COPD and VWF.

    Emma continues to conduct personal injury claims but the majority of her time is now spent pursuing clinical negligence matters. Cases in this area involve misdiagnosis, late diagnosis, MRSA, and dental claims. Emma has experience of dealing with claims involving damage caused at birth such as shoulder dystocia and also assists in pursuing cerebral palsy claims alongside Alison Brooks.

    Emma has acted on behalf of clients in the Organ Retention Group Action and has in the past provided pro bono work to AvMA as a volunteer on their helpine.
